As the start of our robotics career, six students and two teachers began building their robot in the hallway of the old Wissahickon Inn. As is the FIRST Robotics way, help and guidance was graciously offered by FRC team 341 Miss Daisy from Wissahickon High School. The objective was to stack and/or knock down towers of storage bins and then climb a ramp to play "King of the Hill" in the last 30 seconds of the 2 minute competition, in a 2 v 2 format.
We quickly discovered that it's far easier to knock down your opponents towers than to build your own. So Team 1218 focused on defense. Equipped with a 13" diameter suction cup and 8' wide arms, 1218 was immovable once we were able to climb to the top of the ramp and grab onto the top surface. Equipped with a 13" diameter suction cup and 8' wide arms, 1218 was immovable once we were able to climb to the top of the ramp and grab onto the top surface. This combination proved extremely powerful and Team 1218 won our first competition at the Philadelphia Regional as well as the Rookie All Star award in our very first season. This earned us an invitation to the World Championship in Houston, TX. Off to a great start in robotics!
